The yucca blossom is New Mexico’s state flower, and its seed pods are large, bell shaped and sturdy. Each of the pod’s three segment looks like a rabbit’s ears…to me, at least! In 2011 on a whim, I constructed my first “Yucca Pet,” a tan long-eared jackrabbit. My “Yucca Pet” menagerie grew as I received special requests for various creatures, and they were tremendous sellers at my Farmers’ Market booth in Las Cruces. I wrote “Creating Your Own Yucca Pets” as a tutorial for anyone who wants instructions to make these little cuties! This how-to book is fully illustrated with step-by-step instructions and lots of photos. Although yuccas grow and create seed pods in almost every state, I’ve also included instructions for yucca seed pod substitutes – spools or wooden eggs.

This gallery showcases just a few of many hundreds of my “Yucca Pets”: (note: not all of these are in my book.)
